I've only had an allotment a couple of months now. It hadn't been worked for over 4 years, full of mairs tail and brambles but seeing sites like yours has inspired me to keep going. I'malso trying to organise an allotments association so your website has been an insipration and full of idea's to make this work.

Thank you everyone at Birmingham Walsall road allotments.

hi betty
we briefly met a couple of sundays ago with my wife lisa and her uncle bill ensor. we have volunteered to keep the toilets clean and tidy. i was wondering if it was possible for the council to look at riping out and tiding the area around the toilet block as it looks abit of an eyesore and would help to keep the toilets abit cleaner as we had to cut back a few brambles from by the ladies toilets hope to hear from you soon if not speak to you one of the sunday mornings

Well done Betty and Walsall Road plot holders for putting on a jolly good show . Dave and I and others from Thornbridge avenue allotments really enjoyed ourselves despite the weather.
The cakes were great and we had a go on everything. The wood turning demo was inspiring. Last but not least we thought the plots were very well kept especially Betty's.
Look forward to next year. Best wishes to all our friends at Walsall Rd Allotments.

Found out about the website from Antonio (Betty's son) who has donated a very long snake to our music studios! It's made us laugh a lot + we are contemplating making it into an instrument ( like the Vienna vegetable orchestra) ...or maybe it would make a very tasty supper for alot of hungry musicians... lovely allotments, we ciuld do with a scheme like that here in Bristol. Keep up the good work folks!

Hi Betty,
How lovely to see the Scarecrows appearing again at your allotments. A plant-pot is an excellent idea for a hat ! Not so popular here at our gardens this year but promises of some Scarecrows for 2007. Gardeners have been so very uncomfortable with the intense heat here this summer with temps the highest ever recorded - so early morning and late evening has been the best time for any activity. I hear England has been extremely hot too this year. No doubt rain will come along to brighten everything up and nourish the plants !.
Our gardeners over here have had great tomatoes but mine are late as my first plants failed to grow. However I am still looking forward to a great crop soon.
Your allotments are as beautiful as ever Betty.

I have recently found a great new fruit called Dragonfly Fruit and will research whether or not it can be grown in this climate and what part of our world it is grown. Worth a try to buy and taste if you see it around in any of your stores over there.

Greetings to everyone over there in England from Southern California !!
Margaret.

I strive to get our plotholders to have sites as fantastic as yours. Its beautiful.
I am the secretary of CAPA - Cholsey Allotments Protection Association - a group formed in 2003 to fight a campaign to prevent the sale of our allotments for housing. Some people on the Parish Council were pressing for this. So far we have been successful and 96% of one allotment site (about 40 plots) has been rented (this was always pretty well taken up) and now about 80% of the available plots are taken up on the other site (about 60 plots). There is quite a large area on this site that is overgrown with scrub and brambles, but the CAPA working party (mainly the comittee!) intends to get stuck in to this in the Autumn ready for people to take on next year. It has been shown that when a plot is accessible it is taken up, so we live in hope!
I have had an allotment for 35 years and love it. In the winter I get quite gloomy because I can't get out there!
Keep up the good work and I will 'pinch' some of your ideas to improve our own site.

Your allotments are a dream and I'm full of envy!! I went along to a meeting in Kempston Bedford last year to find out if I could get an allotment and left that evening as secretary and treasurer! I'm now trying to get information on setting up and providing members with membership cards and "Rules". If anyone can help with rules of allotments I'd like to hear from them. Maybe one day our little patch in Bedfordshire will be as good as yours - WELL DONE TO EVERYONE INVOLVED.

Just an update to you all at the gardens in Perry Barr. I have recently been planting

I will be interested to see what is growing over there in England after your March

Scarecrows appearing this year. So enjoyed this Site throughout 2005.

Hi Betty, The New Pavillion looks absolutely wonderful. Great set of pictures on the Site of the old and the brand new. Love the one of the truck rolling in with the delivery to the Allotments. Nice inside views. Our gardens do not have the facilities you
have over there in England so that is extra nice for your gardeners. Wish we did.
We do not have what is classed as "permanent structures".
Your WebSite is very informative with the updates on what is going on and I am sure
everyone appreciates the documentation. Good work Betty !!! As usual, excellent

Hello from sunny San Diego. We are putting in our winter gardens now. Our winter garden is everyone else's fall or spring garden. I have gardened in several different climates (all cold) and now I'm working in a climate where freezing temperatures are not a factor. I am learning which plants are sensitive to day length and which plants are sensitive to temperature. Some plants seem to be affected by both. I've also noticed that plants that do grow in our winter grow very slowly between mid November and mid January. Even the weeds grow slowly !! Our daylight at mid=winter is about 10 hours. It is so much fun to be able to garden during the season most people just sit by the fireplace and look at seed catalogs.

hello there everybody, I hope you can all help me, I'm 35 and am currently in my 2nd year of a photography degree course at the university of central Lancashire, I have been taking pictures of an allotment near to where I live since January (near moor park in Preston)and I am hoping to produce a book of images and some local recipes, as an assignment essay I am looking into the benefits of allotment holding, not just the fresh veg etc but more the benefits that other people may not think of such as mental health, exercise, social side for example and would love to hear your thoughts on the subject, do you think allotment holding is getting more popular, why are their existence in towns important, did you acquire your plot after a lengthy wait on a waiting list, did you acquire your plot quite quickly without a wait, has your plot been handed down to you, do you share your plot with family or friend or do you prefer to work alone, any thoughts, stories, advice would be very much appreciated and if you have any recipes you are willing to share then I would also be delighted to receive them, thanks for your time - Sarah

Hi Betty, Absolutely love the picture of you with your Rhubarb !!!! Great harvest of
Aubergines, tomatoes and peppers. Your WebSite is so interesting and has so
many great pictures of active gardeners which surely must give inspiration to many people. What a collection of great looking SCARY Scarecrows too. Have they helped keep the Crows away? The Scarecrows here at The Ocean Beach Community Garden in San Diego seem to be doing their job well, as the Crows have really stopped visiting us, presuming that the Scarecrows are "permanent gardeners" who never go home. I hope they don't figure it out real soon !! Margaret.

Hi Betty,

Nice to see the results of the Scarecrow Competition. How nice of Karen
the Councilwoman to visit your beautiful gardens and judge those magnificent
Scarecrows. WORZEL, DAISY-EYE and SIT-DOWN MAN were great choices.
Many of my friends here in California have been admiring the Scarecrows over there
in England and as we have many crows suddenly appearing in large numbers here
I am hoping our Community Garden makes some good Scarecrows too for our
Competition on the 16th October. It is a nice and apt feature of a garden.
Congratulations to the winners !!!!

The Newsletter you have at your gardens is also very well done and of great
interest. Nicely planned out ! CONGRATS!

Hello from North Carolina. What a happy site! I visited Walsall in ' january '91 and '92 with my daughter Elizabeth, to work on the Gwinnett family history. It was nice to see the green side of Walsall in the summer season in your wonderful photos.
My favorite is of the Sicilan "Snake" Squash plant. It brought back memories of my Sicilian grandfather's farm in Long Island, New York state.

I just wandered around your wonderful site. Garden plots are something I wish more Americans would take on. There is so much good that comes from a garden. And not just the harvest! The hard work, seeing your efforts rewarded, etc. make gardening so wonderful. Community gardens would be so good for us here, but there are few of them compared to what could be. Thank you for this great site!

Great site, don't believe those snake thingy's or the trombones!
If you have a problem with carrot fly, Carl certainly seems to, sow at the same time, mixed in with the carrot seed, some spring onion seed. Carrot fly don't like onions and vicky verky onion fly don't like carrots.

Margaret told me about your lovely garden. I wish i could check it out personally, but i'll just have to enjoy the wonderful photos. I'm also a member of the community garden in Ocean Beach, here in San Diego. I've gardened in Massachusetts and Oregon in the USA. They say Oregon's climate is a lot like England from a gardening point of view. I love the year-round gardening in southern California. We have wild parrots flying overhead and we can grow tropical fruit in addition to the usual garden veggies. I'll visit your site again soon.

Dear Betty, Lovely new photographs added to your site. Some of our gardeners
here in San Diego have visited your WebSite and have been admiring it greatly.
I am apreading the word and will make a Notice for hanging in the garden so that
anyone interested can view your hard-working gardeners over there in England.

Betty, I am in deep SHOCK and total amazement that Alec on your WebSite is an
old friend and that through you I have found my friends Alec and his lovely wife Judy.
I took a chance e-mailing you to find out if he was indeed the friend I used to know
all those years ago and when I received your e-mail today I almost fell off of my chair.
How delightful is that !!
Well thanks to the VEGGIEPATCH GROUP and my friend Chuck here who put you
and I in touch and then viewing your Site I know that Alec is busy digging away just
as I am here in California. What an absolutely TINY WORLD we all live in. Much
tinier that we all would think!!!!
MY KIND REGARDS TO ALEC AND JUDY.........Keep digging Alec !!
Love your compost heap idea for your Pumpkins !

Hi Betty,
Just looked at your Allotments Web- Site and absolutely love the new pictures added.
You are doing a wonderful job both at the allotments and planting your seeds plus
creating such a beautiful and informative Web- Site.
I am so impressed by the Sicilian "cucumber" type veggie that you grow in England.
I have not seen one here in California as yet. I must get a hold of seed for that as
I am totally intrigued by the look of it.
I am enjoying meeting the gardeners across The Pond via the Web-Site. You all
seem so absorbed in gardening. Keep up the good work over there !!!!
I haven't yet started a Site for our Ocean Beach Community Garden here in the USA
but hope to in the future. Betty - you are a total inspiration for me to do that.
HAPPY GARDENING TO YOU ALL IN PERRY BARR, ENGLAND.
Kind Regards......Margaret.

Wow! Totally impressed Betty. It added an extra dimemsion to your excellent website when you showed us around the allotment recently and we got to see the various plots featured. We're certainly going back for a look-see when everything's growing again later this year!
And yes, - it's inspired us to do the old "dig for victory" bit!
Excellent website - totally engaging and interesting, wonderful photos.

lovely web-site and the allotments aren't too bad either, (just joking-they are superb)- I love the tomato on the home page. I belong to Astwood bank allotments, nr. Redditch Worcestershire, where I have been every Sunday for 10 years. I wish my allotment society had such a good web-site.

Many thanks to you Betty for producing an excellent website. This is my 3rd year on this site and my thanks go to the committee for all of their support and encouragement and to all of my fellow allotment holders. I'm sure that this site will be an inspiration for new beginners to come and join our merry band.

from England and enjoy the all-year-round planting here. Will be keeping in touch

You've done a beautiful job with your 'fledgling' site. Keep up the great work! I think it's just wonderful that a lot of you 'urbanites' are utilizing what your park district is offering and puts me in mind of all our large city parks here stateside during WWII. Everyone who was interested was 'alloted' a small plot to grow their own fresh veggies. It was an awsome sight. Thanks for sharing, Betty!

Hello from San Diego, California. My friend Chuck Hansen wrote in your Guest Book
about our Community Garden here in Ocean Beach, San Diego. I am the Membership
Coordinator/Contact there and we have a beautiful garden. We too have Awards given
each year for Tallest Sunflower and many other categories including a Trophy for Gardener of the Year. Love your pictures. We collect pictures of events in our garden
also. As I am a transplant from England (a fugitive from the snow I guess) I try to put
a touch of England to our gardens out here. The difference here is that being Southern
California we grow produce all year long which is so very different but very rewardomg.
We have a Membership of 50. We have a chicken coupe and enjoy fresh eggs and
also keep a few ducks with their own Pond Area. I so enjoyed your WebSite. It is
encouraging me to create one for our Ocean Beach Community Garden here also.
Keep growing !!!
